  1. Shopping in London: Paul A. Young

    DSC07103

Paul A. Young is one of London’s leading chocolatiers, with his City shop winning Best New Chocolate Shop in this year’s Academy of Chocolate awards. His 20 years’ experience as a high-profile chef, patissiere and chocolatier reflects his sophisticated understanding of the subtle intricacies of flavour and texture. This has led to the creation of best-sellers like port and stilton truffles and Marmite ganaches. No wonder he’s regularly referred to as the Heston Blumenthal of chocolate. His range is free from preservatives and additives, using only the finest chocolate including Valrhona, Michel Cluizel and Amadei.

    DSC07107

Paul is incredibly hands-on and on any day you’ll find him beavering away at either one of his two chocolate boutiques, located in Islington and Bank. With ginger hair and an affable Northern demeanour, he’s not hard to miss. At his boutique in Bank, right in the heart of the City’s financial district, I find him upbeat and positive about the outlook for business. History shows that chocolate sales, like lipstick, actually boom during times of economic depression. People will treat themselves to fine chocolate because it’s a small, affordable luxury.

    DSC07115

The shop itself is part of the Royal Exchange, and the location is steeped in London’s incredible 1000 year history. Fragments of Roman stucco, lamps and coins found on the site reveal that it was the centre of Roman Londinium. The shop itself dates back to the Victorian period, when it was a chemist. All of the original features remain, including handsome marble bench tops, wooden shelves and cabinets. Paul takes me on a behind-the-scenes tour of the shop, including the fully customised basement kitchen, where all his fresh, hand-made chocolates are made every day.

    DSC07105

Upstairs, Paul’s collection of loose chocolates are displayed like glittering jewels, which is a comparison that isn’t far removed from the truth, considering that edible platinum and gold leaf can be found amongst the ingredients. Single pieces start at £1.75, going up to £50 for a hand-picked box of 40. His house collection includes the silver award-winning raspberry ganache and gold award-winning sea salted caramel, with stock constantly updated, so there’s always an element of surprise. On my visit there's a London Pride Ale truffle and a Winter Pimms ganache with apple and ginger.

    DSC07111

Then there’s his signature chocolate brownies, which are extra-gooey, with a fudgey (rather than cakey) consistency. You know they’re good because they specifically lack that gritty saccharine-sweetness of lesser versions. They’re also big – and rich – enough to cut into quarters, so they can shared (or not) back at the office, making the £2.95 price point stretch even further.

    DSC07114

The hot chocolate is also a best-seller, made Aztec-style using 100 per cent cocoa and hot water instead of milk. The £2.95 rich concoction is a warming winter drink, with a choice of spices such as ginger, smokey cardamom and two different types of chilli. So good, it's my new favourite London beverage. And that's saying a lot.

  2. Top Bird loves: Scarlet & Violet at Anya Hindmarch

Ladbroke Grove florist Scarlet & Violet has been on my "must-visit" list for a while, so I was interested to hear about their pop-up shop at Anya Hindmarch's Sloane Street boutique. From today until Saturday 18th October, they will be selling cut flowers, planters, vases and found objects in store, as well as making posies for Anya Hindmarch customers. Pretty hand-tied bouquets start at a very reasonable £15, considering the price (and dubious quality) of flowers at your average London tube florist. Look at these lovelies on their website:

The use of country garden blooms like delphiniums, lisianthus and hydrangeas add an old-fashioned quality to their bouquets and arrangements, and I really love their superb understanding of colour, texture and proportion.

I've also been tagged by fellow Aussie ex-pat and magazine journo, Cricket Family with the 'quirky things' meme. I'm all tagged-out, right now, but here's one I did earlier - all fairly quirky, I'd say.

  5. Birdy on a budget

Cheep_cheep Whilst our global markets go into meltdown, we're battening the hatches at the Wee Birdy nest.

So now that birdy is on a budget, I'll be keeping an eagle eye out for clever buys, thrifty shopping and lower price points. And even though I love a great bargain, this doesn't mean that I'll be reporting from Primark every week. I'll still be scouring the streets of London (and the interwebs) for new shopping gems, but I'll be flagging any particularly good buys, as well as solid and innovative design and quality craftmanship. In fact, it's more important than ever to support your local independent shops and designers.

I'm also embracing Make Do and Mend's concept of 'slow fashion' - consuming slower, turning away from fast, disposable fashion, and looking for investment purchases that will last longer than a couple of spin cycles in the washing machine.
Mixed in with carefully considered high-street purchases, they can go a long way to extending the life of your wardrobe.

In the meantime, let me know if there's anything in particular you'd like me to cover.

We fully embraced the cream of London's parklife this weekend, with Hampstead Heath on Saturday and Greenwich on Sunday. The best bit? Parklife is the ultimate in thrifty credit-crunch living, not that you feel the slightest bit frugal when you're too busy frolicking on the heath, enjoying the princely views, and feeling smug about wearing a t-shirt and eating ice-cream in mid-October.

If today is anything to go by, London is in for some gorgeous Autumnal weather this weekend. I'm heading to Hampstead Heath for lots of kicking of leaves, throwing of frisbee and hunting for shiny brown conkers and chestnuts. Perfect.

When H&M announced its upcoming collaboration with Commes des Garcons, the fashion world’s jaws collectively dropped. What was Rei Kawakubo thinking? How is she going to pull it off? And um, when can we get our freakin’ hands on it? (that would be moi.) Well, the wait is almost over as the launch date draws near, and I’m wondering if I should be furtively planning my own little tent city outside Regent Street’s H&M. Better still, I’m hoping to get tickets to Vogue’s exclusive preview evening on Wednesday 12th November. Preview and buy from the entire collection the day before it goes on sale worldwide? 25 per cent off all other H&M ranges on the night? I’m (hopefully) there. Apply for your two tickets now.

  9. Birdy pick of the week

Well that was a much longer pause between posts than I intended, apologies for my blogging absence over the past week. But it's not for lack of inspiration, mind you. It's been a busy couple of weeks here at the Wee Birdy nest, with deadlines mounting after the rush of LFW followed by Design Week. But I've been making like a magpie, collecting shiny bits of news and eye candy for future blogging entertainment. In the meantime, meet these cuties for 'birdy pick of the week':

This is Lucy, my favourite two-year in the blogosphere and her pet cockatiel, Hobson. Based in New Zealand, Lucy's mum makes adorable children's clothing for her Etsy shop, Lucy's Place. I've blogged about her skirts before, but I particularly love her range of simple smock tops and dresses for summer, and tiny print-trimmed peacoats for winter. It's like (more affordable) A.P.C. for toddlers.

You can read more about Lucy over at her mum's blog, Lucy and I, where she discusses her passion for birds (they house lots of rescue birds), where to buy Repetto shoes in New Zealand, and her latest fashion creations (including cool smock tops for grown-ups).

  10. Last chance: Tim Walker

I managed to squeeze in time on Friday afternoon to see Tim Walker's superb exhibition at the Design Museum in London. It closes tomorrow (Sunday) so you've got one day left to see his photography in all its colour-saturated glory. I particularly loved seeing his scrapbooks and 'thinking' behind some of his more spectaclar shoots - so inspirational.

I'm also keen to check out Eglingham Hall in Northumberland one day - has anyone been? It's interesting that he returned to this English manor house time and again for so many shoots - and fully utilised the grounds as well as the interior. It's hard to imagine it now without a mass of coloured balloons tumbling out of the front windows.

I made it to the museum with one hour to spare at 4.45pm, which was actually quite fortunate as I picked up a 'last hour' ticket for £5 (down from the usual £8.50 for adults).  Something to keep in mind ...

p.s. his kitsch pastel kitties reminded me of one particular wedding from my bridal magazine days where the bridesmaids marched down the aisle with matching dyed poodles in pink, lemon, blue and mint.
